Three Myths of Search Engine Optimization

Date: 13 May 2011 Comments: 0

We all know the name of the game for the success of anything we do is Internet exposure. It's the place people go for information, entertainment, relaxation, education, and almost everything else. And that means that everyone's trying to be heard, everyone wants to be at the top, to be seen. And there are a lot of people out there trying to talk about how to get to that spot. But not everyone is being truthful. Here are three things I consider to be myths of search engine optimization.

To get into this we're going to use an example - the term Seattle criminal attorney. In our example let's assume we want to rank as high as possible for this keyword. These things will likely not help you much for ranking highly.

First, the URL. Everyone preaches to have your keyword in your URL. In my experience, though, I've found that not be that important of a factor. Sure it can help, but there are so many other things that are going to tell Google and the other search engines what you are about that if you can't get Seattle criminal attorney into your URL it is not going to make one bit of difference.

Second, comment spam does not work! Many SEO companies, when they are trying to sell you services, will tell you about all the comments they'll go leave with your keyword and link to your website. In about ninety-nine percent of these cases they comments and links are useless. The search engines don't count them and you look like an idiot to the people who own the sites you're leaving comments on.

Third, and finally, spinning articles is also not effective. If you take an article you've written about "How to be a Great Seattle Criminal Attorney" or something and then switch around a couple of the words and republish it, Google will know, and they won't count it. If you look at article writing as an opportunity to educate people, you'll find there is plenty to write about.

There are effective ways to market your business. Take some time to figure them out.
