It can be difficult when starting a new hobby to know which is the best way to start. Regardless of whether you are wanting to start scrapbooking, guitar playing, or chess, it seems that as soon as you start looking at starting up, there are people around every corner trying to sell you “everything you need to get started in…”.

Take fly fishing for example. I went down to my local sports shop, because I wanted to learn fly fishing, and I thought it would be a good bonding experience for my son and I. The shopkeeper immediately started to try and sell me on these fly tying kits that they had that apparently had everything I needed to get started. I tried to explain to the shopkeeper that I wanted to learn all the ins and outs of the sport. That meant I wanted to learn how to tie my own flys and build everything up from scratch. He gave me a sort of glazed over look and told me I’d probably need to go to a specialist fishing shop. Ah well, I guess I’ll just have to research it on the Internet.
