When people decide that they want a dog for either a deterrent or for protection, they get confused between the difference between a watch dog and a guard dog.

Now, a dog barking at everything that comes by your property is not a watch dog. Both watch dogs and guard dogs have to complete some form of obedience training. Both have to understand their place among the family with consistent firm commands and both have to understand who the dominant alpha male is in the household.

The true difference comes from when they interact with strangers. A watch dog is trained to alert their owners that something is amiss on the property and it is more than a squirrel. But that is where this type of training ends. If you want a pet who will not only alert, but respond, and by respond, I mean attack, then a guard dog is exactly what you need.
