If your security system includes security cameras then using fake security cameras to augment their range can be effective.  To be a deterrent then dummy cameras must be placed in a highly visible place and to all appearances look real.  That means having any cords, wires, mounting brackets, lenses, operational lights, etc. that a real camera would have.  If possible you can buy empty camera housings of the same style as your real cameras so that they appear identical.  Make sure the dummy cameras are aimed as a real camera would be, an experienced criminal would check for blind spots and if your fake security camera doesn't appear to be aimed like an actual camera it would be an obvious give away using a cheap fake security camera.  If possible you can have the dummy cameras placed in such a way that they force the criminal in front of the real cameras which can be more carefully hidden.
