What You Need To Know About Electric and Hydraulic Winches

June 6th, 2010

Generally, winches are available in two major types —- the electric and hydraulic winch. An electric winch is the most common choice for light off-road vehicles that weigh up to three tons or more. They are very popular due to their reliability, user-friendliness, and convenient installation. Technically, both the hydraulic and electric winches are very effective but they differ in the use of power source. The electric variety is connected to the vehicle battery while the hydraulic is tapped into the car’s hydraulic pump.

The best asset of electrically-powered winches is their ease of installation. In addition, they can be utilized even if the car’s engine is turned off. However, they must just be used momentarily since this can put a tremendous amount of strain to the vehicle’s battery. Aside from that, they are much affordable then hydraulic varieties.

The main drawback of this kind of winch is the fact that it can cause faulty electrical wirings that is quite difficult to locate. Moreover, it can generate a considerable amount of heat when under load causing its electrical components to melt or acquire irreversible damage. Since they are electrically powered, these winches are vulnerable to water damage. And there is a potential risk that your hand can get jammed into the winch when precautions are not properly adhered.

On the other hand, hydraulic automotive winches are quieter, durable and more versatile. As a matter of fact, they can still offer optimum winching performance even under water. Additionally, you will rarely worry about over-heating problems unlike the electrical type. Apart from that, they are capable of providing a constant pull regardless of the load’s weight. Furthermore, they are much safer to use since they don’t continue pulling once stopped.

The downside of hydraulic winches is the fact that they cannot operate when the engine is off. Also, they perform much slower when there is no load.

Discreetly weigh the pros and cons of both the electric and hydraulic winch before making the final decision to ensure that you will be selecting the one in which you will benefit the most!

Believe it or not, car window tinting isn’t just used to make your ride look cool. There are other more practical benefits to having your windows tinted.

Don’t get me wrong, blacked out windows definitely make your car look hot and perhaps for some people, this is the only reason they have tints, but for other more practical souls like myself the reasons are a little less glamorous.

The number one reason my car windows are tinted is for security. If you are a tradesman and keep all your tools in the back of your van, it’s not the best idea to advertise the fact that they are there. Dark window tinting means that curious a passerby can’t see the thousands of dollars worth of equipment sitting on the floor of my van and be tempted to break in and steal my livelihood.

Another reason I like tinting is the fact that it helps with sunburn. Yes, it really does. When you have fair skin to the point of being glow in the dark any little bit of direct sunlight with those harsh UV rays really burns. The window tinting dilutes the rays ensuring I don’t end up looking like a lobster at the end of my shift.

When you decide to buy a new car it can sometimes be a hard road, but the first step in applying for an auto loan is knowing what the best interest rate is for your credit score.

Before you ever set foot onto a dealership lot you should know your credit score and what auto loan rates there are for your credit score category. If your credit score is above 700, you are considered golden. This means you have great credit and can get the lowest interest rates available. For those who have a score of 600 to 700 you’re considered by lenders to have an okay credit score. The best interest rate for you would be between 5 percent to 10 percent for auto loans. If your credit score is below 600, you are considered to have bad credit. Many lenders will either turn you away or offer you auto loans for bad credit with extremely high interest rates, up to 25 percent.

Knowing the best interest rate you can get for your credit score can help you make an educated decision before signing a loan contract. It will also help when using an auto loan calculator to figure out your monthly payments.

The Speed Camera

For people who spend a lot of time driving on the public highway there are always the specter of the traffic police and expensive penalties for those of us who are unfortunate enough to get caught speeding. The police have a variety of weapons in their arsenal to do all they can to catch people who break the speed limits but the most hated by motorists is probably the speed camera.

Gatso speed cameras can be hidden at any point along the public roads although they are supposed to be used only at accident black spots. As you approach the speed camera a sensor send out and receive an electromagnetic signal which is interpreted to determine how fast you are going. If you are breaking the speed limit the camera will be activated and a photograph will be taken of you rear number plate. You will then find a letter on your doormat in a couple of weeks telling you how much you have been fined and how many penalty points you have accrued.

Do I Need A Car Insurance Broker?

June 17th, 2009

Deciding whether or not to go with a car insurance broker can be a difficult decision, as each person has different insurance needs and it is completely determinate upon your ability to afford broker fees, whether you can find a broker that can actually help you, and the type of insurance that you are looking for. Generally, a person that is looking for liability insurance for just a couple of vehicles probably can deal with an insurance agent directly.

A couple of things to watch out for when using a car insurance broker are that they may try to convince you to go with Company A because Company A pays them a higher commission for new customers. They may also have hidden costs and fees that you weren’t aware of when signing up. This is not relevant to all or even most car insurance brokers, but its just something to be aware of.

If you have a fleet of vehicles that you need insurance for, or if you are trying to get comprehensive insurance or gap coverage then you may want to consider a broker, as they will be able to find you a good deal, especially if you are insuring a number of commercial vehicles at once. Talk to some brokers and find out what they can do for you, what they charge up front and what their fees are.

If you need more information Car Insurance Brokers that is more detailed than this one.

Who Needs Comprehensive Car Insurance

The question of whether or not you need Comprehensive Car Insurance comes down to affordability versus risk. Comprehensive Car Insurance covers you in case of scenarios like your car being damaged or vandalized, your car damaged by weather, such as hail or wind, or your car being damaged by flood or fire.
If you have high risk factors for these type of events, then you may want to consider comprehensive car insurance, depending upon cost. For instance, if you live in a high crime area or an area where flooding or extreme weather conditions occur. Also, you may want it anyway if the car you purchased was worth a lot of money, or if you value it personally, such as a restoration.
One thing that comprehensive generally covers is windshield repair and replacement. This is a common occurrence, and if the premium isn’t that much, it might be a good idea to get this insurance, or at least a certain portion of comprehensive insurance, as windshield replacement can cost several hundred dollars.
Talk it over with your agent and decide if comprehensive insurance is something that is right for you. If you need more information you can read an article here about Comprehensive Auto Insurance that covers the subject in more detail.

A Boy and His Pit Bike

May 24th, 2009

All you single parents out there would know what I’m talking about.

I bought my 12 year old son a pit bike for his birthday. He loved it; he rode it all afternoon every afternoon. Then a month after he got it, he rode again, this time I let him go out to the jumps with it. Then, when it was time for him to come back, he didn’t come. I waited an hour till dinner, and then he still didn’t come. I started to get worried. I had dinner, then when I finished it was dark.

At seven o’clock I thought “That’s it, I’m going to go and look for him”.

So I hopped into the car then started to drive to where he went. 15 minutes later, there was still no sign of him. But then, I saw a black spot moving very slowly towards my house. I parked the car, jumped out, and ran towards the shadow.

Not knowing what it was, my heart was beating very fast, then I couldn’t help myself, I screamed out his name “Jacob!”

I saw the shadow move its head towards me. “Dad!” screamed Jacob.

I was so happy that he was safe.

“What happened?”

“Oh one of my pit bike parts fell off. I think it was the wheel.”

“Ok let’s get you and it home, before it gets any later.”

In the morning we looked at the pit bike. “I will take it down to the mechanic for you while you eat your breakfast”.

So I took the bike down to the mechanic. He put a new wheel in and checked all the other parts. He gave it the ok, and I brought it home to Jacob.

The following week, we were back to our normal life, Jacob going out and riding his pit bike. I hope this will never have to happen again.

Jacob is now 20 and has a job as a mechanic, and is the best in our small country town, enjoying his life with his soon to be wife. His father has retired and is living his life, working around the house. He sees his son as often as he can and loves his life.

Jacob will never ever go around doing jumps again, but he still loves to ride on his pit bike.
