Brown Rugs for Your Living Room

A rug is essential to add comfort to a living room floor especially if you have hard flooring rather than carpet. If you have a neutral living room color scheme, as many of us do, then consider adding one of the many brown area rugs you will find on the market these days to add the finishing touch you need.

Brown goes so well with all shades of cream, beige and peach that you will not have too many problems finding a brown rug that looks as if it was made for your room but as usual there are subtle differences in color that makes one brown rug go better than another so always use color swatches and samples to check that your color scheme continues to work once you add your rug. This might entail adding additional accessories to tie the look together depending on the color of the rug (or the colors in it).

The darkest shade of brown will need some help to fit into an otherwise lighter colored room, for example. A dark chocolate brown rug would not work well alone in a light cream room. It needs a few other items in the same shade to avoid the dark color standing out too much. But a few brown cushions here or a dark brown wooden side table there would help balance things nicely.

Contemporary living rooms suit plain brown rugs which have a lot of texture. Think about adding a brown leather shag rug if you want to give your room a modern look (or a wool shag pile might do just as well if leather is out of your price range).

For a traditional living room, a brown rug with a subtle pattern would be better. Perhaps a Chinese rug with a brown or beige background (or even a mushroom shade) or a southwestern or Persian style rug with a rust colored background would work well in your room.
